Adam Sandler was born September 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, to Stan and Judy Sandler. He grew up in Manchester, New Hampshire with three older siblings and attended Manchester Central High School. He took the stage for the first time on a whim at a comedy club in Boston at the age of seventeen. While pursuing a Bachelor's degree in fine arts at New York University , he continued performing in comedy clubs. His first acting job was the semi-recurring role of Smitty on the television series The Cosby Show, which he landed his freshman year at NYU.

Sandler's television comedy career took off when Dennis Miller took note of Sandler performing at the Improv Theatre, a L.A. comedy club. Miller referred him to the producer of Saturday Night Live and he was taken on as a writer and occasional performer.
